How to create a Chiropractic Leader
“A leader influences others to willingly take on their vision and own it as their own!”
Once my flight landed in Salt Lake City, I quickly jumped into the first Uber I could find.
My overfriendly driver, Cody, introduced himself and asked me what I was doing in town. Now I was on my way to speak at an Elite coaching chiropractic seminar and my first thought was, “How can I frame my answer in a way that will strike Cody’s Chiropractic curiosity?”. I told him that I was going to speak at an event with the world’s most elite chiropractors that specialize in a technique that increases nerve flow to all of your vital organs which can prevent disease from growing in your body.
He let me know he had never been to a chiropractor before and naturally he wanted to know more! Next I said, “Cody it is clear to me that you are a smart guy and if you think about it, the only way that your body can get nerve flow from your brain to all of your vital organs is through the spinal cord. And anytime that there is a block in your spine, it blocks the flow in your spinal cord. Sometimes you can even see where peoples blocks are when you look at their posture. These days when people are constantly looking down at their phones etc. Where do you think the most common block is?” Cody’s face then lit up as he had his first chiropractic light bulb moment!
The he began asking me rapid fire questions: “Does this mean that chiropractic can help with organ problems? Could it help people recover faster from surgery? Could it help people even prevent surgery?”. Yes Cody I replied! His voice then deepened as he replied, “WHY DON’T MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS!!?”.
Before we even made our way all the way out of the airport traffic, Cody was selling me on chiropractic! He then said something funny. He said, “WOW if insurance company knew about this they could really save a lot of money!” Instead of embarking down the Insurance coverage rabbit hole I simply replied with “I like the way you think Cody”! Next Cody said, “WOW THIS MUST be great for anyone that is like 40-90 years old”. Again, it would have been easy to correct him and shout out no its for everyone. Thankfully I knew better. Showing off my chiropractic knowledge would not influence him on the level that I was committed to. I simply replied with “You are right! AND guess what else? If you think about it, whether a baby is born naturally or with a c-section, they are pulled out by their neck causing their very first misalignments blocking the energy to their vital organs. By the look on Cody’s face it was clear that he was experiencing his second Chiropractic light bulb moment.
So I quickly took advantage of this peak and asked him if he had kids. He said that yes, he had two. Without pausing I said in the most hypnotic voice I could muster up, “Next time you see your kids you may notice misalignments in their posture, like a slight rotation of the head or perhaps one shoulder lower than the other. Maybe even a foot that flares out. Before I could even finish Cody interrupted me and asked how to find one of these special chiropractors for kids, “Like what do I Google?”.
Shortly after exchanging information we arrived at my hotel where Cody’s next “riders” were waiting. I proceeded into the hotel, checked in and began to press the elevator button only to relize that I had left my cell phone in Cody’s Uber! OH NO!! I immediately called my own number from the front desk phone. Cody answered and kindly shared that his riders had dinner reservations so he would first drop them of then return the hotel in aprox. 20-30 min with my phone. As I began to make myself comfortable near the window I suddenly saw his car barreling around the corner. I rushed out and as he rolled down his window the now wide eyed couple I had seen earlier stuck their heads out the window. I said “I thought you had dinner reservations!” They replied we did but we had to come back and see where we could get one of these special chiropractors!
I share this story not to brag about my advanced chiropractic conversion skills. I share this story for two reasons. The first is this: when I got into Cody’s vehicle I DID NOT go in with the intention of converting him into just a chiropractic patient. In fact that is NEVER my intention when talking chiropractic with everyone I meet. I went in with the intention to influence Cody to become a chiropractic leader! I didn’t see him as the one, I saw him as is circle of influence. When I meet someone new I think about all the people that they know and all the people that they will meet that I will never have the opportunity to interact with. So, my mission is not to create a chiropractic patient but instead a chiropractic leader. The second reason that I share this story is this: If we as chiropractors and chiropractic assistants go out into the world and talk chiropractic to everyone that we meet then at best we will make a dent is society. When we invest in our teams so that they have the ability and confidence to empower our patients to go out into the world and become chiropractic leaders, that is when we reach humanity with chiropractic and change the course of history!
